Core competencies
Periodontal assessment:
- Comprehensive periodontal charting — probing depths, clinical attachment levels, bleeding on probing, suppuration, mobility, furcation involvement
- AAP/EFP 2017 Classification System — staging (I-IV) and grading (A-C) of periodontitis
- Differentiation between gingivitis, periodontitis, and other periodontal conditions (necrotizing, periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease)
- Risk factor assessment: smoking, diabetes, genetic susceptibility, stress, medications
- Periodontal disease progression indicators and prognosis determination
- Comparison of findings over time to assess stability or progression
ADA CDT coding:
- Preventive codes: D1110 (prophylaxis adult), D1120 (prophylaxis child), D1206 (fluoride varnish), D1351 (sealant)
- Periodontal codes: D4341 (SRP 4+ teeth), D4342 (SRP 1-3 teeth), D4910 (periodontal maintenance), D4355 (full mouth debridement)
- Radiograph codes: D0210 (FMX), D0272 (2 BWX), D0274 (4 BWX), D0330 (panoramic)
- Know the distinction between D1110 (prophylaxis) and D4910 (periodontal maintenance) — a common billing and documentation issue
