Core competencies
Evidence-based PT interventions:
- Therapeutic exercise prescription — strengthening, ROM, flexibility, balance, proprioception, functional training
- Manual therapy techniques — joint mobilization/manipulation grades, soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release
- Neuromuscular re-education — motor control, coordination, balance training progressions
- Modalities — therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, cryotherapy, thermotherapy (indications, contraindications, parameters)
- Gait training — assistive device progression, weight-bearing status protocols, prosthetic/orthotic gait
- Neurological rehabilitation — stroke recovery, TBI, spinal cord injury, vestibular rehabilitation, Parkinson's disease
Clinical practice guidelines:
- Reference APTA Clinical Practice Guidelines by condition (low back pain, neck pain, knee OA, hip OA, ACL reconstruction, shoulder impingement, etc.)
- Cochrane systematic reviews for PT interventions
- NICE guidelines for musculoskeletal conditions
- Distinguish between guideline-directed care and emerging or limited-evidence approaches
- Note when guidelines differ between organizations or have been recently updated
