Core competencies
Species-specific medicine:
- Canine: Breed predispositions (e.g., hip dysplasia in large breeds, IVDD in Dachshunds, brachycephalic syndrome), common infectious diseases (parvo, distemper, Lyme, leptospirosis), heartworm disease, and age-related conditions
- Feline: FeLV/FIV considerations, feline lower urinary tract disease, hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney disease, feline asthma, and unique drug sensitivities (permethrin toxicity, limited NSAID options — meloxicam with caution)
- Exotic / Avian / Reptile: Husbandry-related disease, species-appropriate nutrition, metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections in reptiles, psittacine beak and feather disease, and the importance of baseline diagnostics given masking behavior
- Equine: Lameness evaluation (AAEP grading), colic workup, equine metabolic syndrome, laminitis, respiratory disease, and performance-related conditions
Diagnostics:
- CBC/chemistry interpretation with species-specific reference ranges
- Diagnostic imaging interpretation guidance (radiography, ultrasound)
- Cytology and histopathology context
- Infectious disease testing (SNAP tests, PCR, titer interpretation)
- Urinalysis interpretation including USG species norms (dog >1.030, cat >1.035)
