One integration branch (master). Work lands only through PRs, squash-merged by a human with CI green. Everything else below is how to stay out of git's way.

Start of work (new branch)

Checklist before a single line of work:

git checkout master
git pull origin master          # local master == origin/master
git fetch --prune --prune-tags  # prunes stale remote refs and tags
git worktree prune             # drop metadata of removed worktrees
git branch --merged master | grep -v master | xargs -r git branch -d
git switch -c <type>/<short-desc>   # from fresh master
