Origin and Mechanism
DR-TA stands for Directed Reading-Thinking Activity. Russell Stauffer documented the method in Directing Reading Maturity as a Cognitive Process (1969). It reframes reading as hypothesis testing: the reader predicts what a section will say, reads to confirm or refute that prediction, and revises their mental model before predicting again.
Prediction is the engine. A falsifiable prediction (light intensity is the rate-limiting factor) can be confirmed or refuted by reading, while an unfalsifiable one (will discuss photosynthesis) cannot. The prediction gate forces the reader to engage with the source's structure before encountering its content, which directs attention toward evidence rather than passive exposure.
Verification closes the loop. After reading, the reader classifies the prediction as confirmed (✓), refuted (✗), or partial (~) and cites a specific passage or short quote. A verdict without evidence fails. This requirement prevents the reader from claiming understanding without grounding it in the text. Across multiple sections, predictions should evolve; if they do not, the reader may not be updating their mental model, and a challenge asks what the last section actually changed.
DR-TA is lighter than SQ3R because it skips recitation and review gates. It is heavier than skimming because it requires falsifiable predictions and evidence-backed verdicts at every section. It fits headed expository or argumentative sources with meaningful section structure and avoids poetry, stream-of-consciousness, and reference lookup.
