Goal

Origin and Mechanism
INSERT stands for Interactive Notation System to Improve Reading Effectiveness. It was developed by Barto and Caverly in 1981 as a low-friction margin-marking system that keeps the reader engaged during reading rather than deferring all analysis to a post-reading summary. The method is designed for fast engagement or as a pre-pass before deeper reading.
The five symbols are the engagement layer. ✓ marks something the reader already knew or agrees with. ? marks something unclear that raises a question. ! marks something surprising or important. * marks a top key idea. → marks a connection to other knowledge. Each symbol serves a different cognitive function: ✓ surfaces confidence (which must be tested later), ? surfaces confusion (which becomes a question), ! and * surface importance, and → surfaces transfer.
Chunk marking is the reading layer. The source is presented 1–3 paragraphs at a time, and the reader places at least one mark per chunk with a symbol and an exact line or phrase locator. For ? and →, the reader must also state what is unclear or what it connects to. Zero marks fails because it signals passive reading. All-✓ marking is challenged because it signals a fluency illusion. No → after key ideas emerge prompts a connection attempt.
Review lists are the consolidation layer. After reading, marks become four lists: Questions (every ?), Study Notes (every ! and final *), Connections (every →), and Confidence candidates (every ✓). Every question must be dispositioned as will research, will ask, or can skip. This step prevents questions from being recorded and forgotten.
