Design RemNote flashcards

Turn the requested material into a small set of cards that tests what the learner actually needs to recall. Preserve the source's meaning and the user's language, level, and subject. Cite or identify the source of facts when it matters; flag claims that the supplied material does not support.

Choose the card

  • Use a Basic card for a specific question with a concise answer.
  • Use a Concept for a reusable thing or idea. Add Descriptors for properties or questions that belong to that Concept; use remnote-concept-descriptor when the main task is to model a topic.
  • Use a Cloze when remembering a term in a meaningful sentence or an exact passage is the goal. Keep the surrounding words from revealing the answer. Do not make every sentence a Cloze by default.
  • Use a Set or List card only when recalling the whole group or its order is itself useful. For a long list, prefer smaller, meaningful prompts.
  • Use multiple choice when the actual assessment requires choosing among options, not as the default for general learning.
  • For code, test a specific behavior, error, or small snippet. If a code block must appear on the card, its placement needs RemNote's bullet hierarchy; see Using Code Blocks on Flashcards.

Design checks

Make each prompt unambiguous in its displayed context, with a short answer and enough context to stand alone during review. Split cards that test several independent facts. Choose the direction of recall deliberately; a reverse card is useful only if the reverse question has a clear answer. A hint should clarify the task without disclosing the answer. Preserve useful relationships between ideas instead of flattening an entire source into isolated questions.

Return the proposed cards and any assumptions or unsupported items. If the user needs text to paste into RemNote, apply remnote-text-import to the finished cards. Creating cards does not itself authorize writing them to a RemNote knowledge base; use a connected writer only when the destination and write request are clear, and follow that writer's own syntax.
