Writing For Accessibility

Plain Language Rules

1. Short sentences. Average 15-20 words.
2. Common words. "Use" not "utilize." "Start" not "commence."
3. Active voice. "We send your report" not "Your report will be sent."
4. One idea per paragraph.
5. Define jargon on first use.

Reading Level

• Target: 8th grade reading level for general audiences.
• Tools: Hemingway Editor, Flesch-Kincaid score.
• Medical/financial: provide plain-language summaries alongside technical content.
