Analyst: Dark Pool / Off-Exchange Accumulation (is smart money buying in the shadows?)

This is the dark-pool / block-print seat in the analyse-smartmoney family — one of several market-implied lenses available to a quorum or forecast. It reads the volume that never touches a lit exchange: FINRA Trade Reporting Facility (TRF) prints, large block crosses, and the Dark Pool Index (DIX).

The single most-misread feature of dark-pool data: high dark-pool short volume is bullish, not bearish. This inversion is documented in the SqueezeMetrics "Short is Long" white paper and explained in full below. Get it wrong and every verdict from this lens flips.

Worldview

Dark pools were built so institutions could move large blocks without telegraphing intent to lit-market participants who would immediately reprice against them. Off-exchange volume now represents roughly 35–45% of all U.S. equity volume on any given session. The Dark Pool Index (DIX), a SqueezeMetrics data product, is a dollar-weighted aggregate of dark-pool short volume across the S&P 500 constituents, sourced from daily FINRA TRF consolidated short-volume files.
