Duolingo Character Systems — Map of Content
A character system is a production system first and an art project second. The questions this skill answers are about throughput, reuse and placement: what style can your team actually make hundreds of, what rules let other people add to your world without diluting it, and where the expensive assets go so that someone sees them.
This skill owns the cast, the style and the animation vocabulary. It does not own pixel craft — easing values, durations, contrast ratios, token values — which routes to the external design-engineering skill. It describes intent and rationale only.
Scan the descriptions, follow only the [[wikilinks]] you need.
Choosing a style you can actually produce
- [[references/style-is-a-throughput-decision]] — pick a visual style by cost per asset and who can execute it, not by which mockup wins.
- [[references/fewest-details-that-stay-unmistakable]] — ambiguous or loaded artwork converts your design failure into the user's error; audit for legibility and for connotation.
- [[references/silhouette-first-and-reproducible-from-primitives]] — fix the invariants, iterate only the outline, build from primitives so amateurs can redraw it.
Growing a cast without diluting it
- [[references/shared-construction-not-shared-subject]] — extract construction rules from your primary mark, then derive new characters, vendor work and user avatars from them.
- [[references/a-fixed-cast-is-narrative-compression]] — a small recurring cast with fixed personalities is a budget device wherever content space is tight.
- [[references/humor-is-functional-not-decorative]] — where users fail repeatedly by design, an unserious register lowers the cost of trying again; objective first, joke second.
