Manage Git Tags

Objective

Establish the exact requested tag object/ref locally or at a verified remote with correct type, target, annotation, signature, and immutability policy.

Use When

• Create a lightweight, annotated, or signed tag at an exact object.
• Verify tag signature, annotation, tagger, object type, and peeled target.
• Publish or delete one exact remote tag when explicitly authorized.
• Assess an existing tag for idempotence or conflict.

Do Not Use / Route Elsewhere

• Use the repository-specific release procedure for version, changelog, build, and artifact work.
• Use sync-branches for branches.
• Use package/deployment workflows for hosted releases or publication.
• Do not silently move a published tag.
