Socratic Method (소크라테스식 문답법)
"I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think." — Socrates
"The unexamined life is not worth living." — Socrates, Apology
Purpose (목적)
The Socratic Method is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue that stimulates critical thinking and draws out ideas and underlying presuppositions. It does NOT deliver answers — it guides people to discover their own.
Core Principles
- Questions over statements (진술보다 질문) — The teacher/leader asks; the learner discovers
- Productive discomfort (생산적 불편함) — Confusion is not failure; it's the precondition for insight
- Elenchus (논박) — Expose contradictions in someone's beliefs so they can refine them
- Intellectual humility (지적 겸손) — Socrates' "I know that I know nothing" (나는 내가 모른다는 것을 안다)
- Maieutics (산파술) — Like a midwife helping deliver a baby, the questioner helps deliver ideas already present in the thinker
