Why Dialogue is Hard

Dialogue is not transcribed speech. Real people repeat themselves, trail off, use filler words, circle back, and take ten sentences to say what could be said in two. Dialogue in fiction (or in a well-designed agent) is compressed speech — it sounds natural but every line does work.
