Build skills that add knowledge, tools, and reliable boundaries a capable model would otherwise lack. Success is a better result with less unnecessary instruction—not identical plans, wording, or creative choices across runs.

For a small skill or local correction, make the small change directly. Use the deeper references when ownership, external contracts, evaluation, or publication makes the work consequential. The sections below are decision aids, not mandatory phases or required deliverables.

Outcomes, Boundaries, and Freedom

Define the desired result, the scope of authority, and what must remain true. Let the model choose architecture, tools, presentation, and investigation order unless an actual contract constrains them. Examples and templates illustrate options; they are not hidden requirements.

Keep exact instructions for fragile syntax, irreversible effects, secrets, provenance, compatibility, and user-specified conventions. Explain the reason when it is not apparent. For reversible work already authorized, grant room to proceed without repeated confirmation. Do not convert capability into permission for external writes, spending, disclosure, or destructive actions.

Before retaining a rule, ask what plausible failure it prevents. Remove generic coaching, arbitrary counts, compulsory reading stacks, repeated checklists, taste bans, and fixed workflows that do not earn their cost. A creative skill should help the model explore useful possibilities, not funnel every brief into the same aesthetic or answer shape. A standards or safety skill may correctly leave much less freedom.
