First: figure out what kind of hard this is
Not all motivation crises are the same. Diagnosis before advice.
Ask the user (or infer from context) which situation applies:
1. Acute setback
A specific bad event just happened: paper rejection, failed experiment, bad advisor meeting, harsh feedback, comparison to a peer who just published.
→ The problem is not the PhD. The problem is one event. Treat it as such.
