Churn and Win-Back Lead Generation
A churned customer or a lost deal is not the same as a cold prospect — they already know the product, already went through evaluation or onboarding once, and their reason for leaving is knowable rather than a mystery. Treating this population as a genuine, segmented lead source, rather than a single blanket "we miss you" email, produces some of the best-converting outbound available, because the research work of understanding the account has already largely been done.
Segment by the actual reason for leaving before doing anything else
Fixable left over a feature gap that's since shipped, a
pricing tier that's since changed, a bad support
experience from a team that's since changed
Situational left because the buyer's role or company changed, a
budget cut, a company-wide vendor consolidation
unrelated to product satisfaction
Fundamental left because a competitor was genuinely better suited,
or the product category itself was no longer needed
A blanket win-back email sent to all three segments identically wastes the message on people it will never work for and under-serves the people it could genuinely win back. The fixable segment deserves specific, direct messaging about exactly what changed; the situational segment deserves patience and a longer-cycle nurture; the fundamental segment is usually not worth pursuing at all, and continuing to email them is a minor but real reputational cost.
