Free Tool as a Lead Magnet
A genuinely useful free tool is a different category of asset from any written content: it gets bookmarked, it gets shared in forums and communities without any prompting, it gets cited by AI answer engines when someone asks how to calculate or check something it addresses, and unlike a blog post it keeps working with almost no maintenance once built. Most companies default to a content campaign because it's a more familiar production process, even where a small tool would perform better and last longer.
What makes a good tool candidate
Good fit a calculation people currently do in a spreadsheet or
by hand, a checker or validator for something in your
category, a simple lookup over data you already hold,
a generator producing something people genuinely need
Poor fit a "tool" that's really a lead form with extra steps,
requiring an email before showing any result
The test is whether the tool would be genuinely useful with your branding removed. A calculator that gives a real, useful answer and happens to be built by your company is a lead magnet; a form disguised as a tool that gates the actual output behind an email capture is just a gated asset with worse conversion mechanics than a straightforward form. See gated-content-lead-capture for the honest version of that trade-off, and original-research-citability in the companion GEO skills pack for the broader principle that a genuinely useful tool earns citations no gated asset can.
