Gated Content Lead Capture
Gating an asset behind a form trades reach for a name and an email address. That trade is often a bad one — most gated content would generate more actual pipeline value ungated and cited than it generates in low-quality form-fills — and the decision of what to gate deserves more scrutiny than it usually gets.
Decide what's actually worth gating
Gate a genuinely high-effort, high-specificity asset
someone would pay for if you charged: a real
benchmark report, a detailed template, a tool
Don't gate most blog-length educational content, and
anything you want cited or found via search —
gating makes it invisible to both
The test: would this be worth the reader's email address if they had to choose between reading it and not? A generic "10 tips for X" PDF fails this test badly and produces form-fills from people who'll never open the resulting email. A genuinely proprietary benchmark or a real, usable template passes it.
See paywall-gating-for-ai in the companion GEO skills pack — the same logic that applies to gating for AI-answer-engine visibility applies here: gating destroys discoverability, so gate only what genuinely justifies the trade.
