Lookalike Audience Modeling
A lookalike audience is built by giving an ad platform, or a similar modeling approach applied to B2B prospecting data, a list of your best customers and asking it to find more companies or people who resemble them on whatever signals it has access to. It's a genuinely useful expansion technique, and it's also frequently misused with a seed list too small, too unrepresentative, or too vague in what "best" actually means to produce a meaningful model.
The seed list quality determines everything
Weak seed your entire customer list, undifferentiated — the
model learns "resembles an average customer," which
includes your worst-fit, lowest-value accounts equally
Strong seed your best customers specifically — highest LTV,
fastest to value, most likely to renew and expand —
a deliberately curated, not comprehensive, list
"Best" has to mean something specific and defensible, not just "customers we happen to have." A seed list built from your highest-LTV, fastest-time-to-value, lowest-churn customers produces a fundamentally different, more useful model than a seed list that's just every customer in the database, because the model is only as good as the pattern it's given to learn from.
