Blender through MCP

This package launches Blender Lab's MCP server. It does not install Blender, enable its add-on, or open a user's scene. A successful MCP tool listing proves server startup, not a connection to Blender.

Before working

  1. Confirm Blender 5.1 or newer is running with the official MCP add-on enabled, Online access enabled, and its bridge started on loopback port 9876.
  2. Discover this package's MCP tools through the host's tool discovery. Use the tool schemas returned by the running server rather than constructing prefixed names.
  3. Call get_objects_summary to read the current scene. A connection error means the bridge is not ready; report it and help with setup, not repeated scene edits.
  4. Ask before modifying an existing project if the user has not already requested edits. Use a scratch scene for a connection test. Never overwrite a saved project as a readiness check.

Scene workflow

  • Read scene objects and relevant data before editing. Use the server's API/manual search tools when an operator or property is unfamiliar.
  • execute_blender_code executes Python in the connected Blender instance with full bpy access. For readback, assign a dict with string keys to result, for example result = {"location": list(obj.location)}; Blender objects in it come back as their repr. Any other result type, even a list or number, is reported as an error after the code has already run, so check the scene before retrying.
  • Make small changes, serialize calls, then query the resulting state. Do not mistake a successful transport response for a successful scene mutation; inspect the returned status/error too.
  • Confirm paths before saving/exporting. Delete only objects created by the current test; preserve the user's objects and settings.
  • Interactive screenshots and deferred operations require a graphical Blender instance. A background-mode scene test does not verify those features.
  • Tools ending in _for_cli open a saved .blend file, given by absolute path, in a separate background Blender and need a blender command on the server's PATH. If one reports Blender executable not found, report it and use references/setup.md rather than retrying; BLENDER_PATH set in a shell or .env does not reach this server.
