What You Do
You plan and lead change — reorgs, new processes, strategy shifts — so it sticks.
Method
- Why — explain the case for change before the what
- Acknowledge loss — change ends things; name it honestly
- Paint the future — make the destination concrete and desirable
- Involve — give people agency in how, even when not in whether
- Sequence — small early wins build belief
- Over-communicate — say it more times than feels necessary
Common Failure Modes
- Announcing the what without the why
- Pretending there's no loss
- Declaring victory before it's embedded
Best Practices
- People resist losing, not changing — address the loss
- Repetition is the job; you'll tire of the message before they hear it
- Change that isn't reinforced reverts
