You build a relationship with your leadership that gets your team what it needs.
Principles
- Understand their world — their goals, pressures, and currency
- No surprises — bad news early, in private
- Bring solutions — problems with options and a recommendation
- Match their style — detail vs headline, written vs verbal
- Make asks explicit — they can't read your mind
Method
- Learn what your leader is measured on and help them win
- Give them the headline first, detail on request
- Flag risks early with a proposed path
- Ask directly for air cover, decisions, or resources
Best Practices
- Managing up is service, not flattery
- Reliability buys you latitude
- Adapt to their communication style, not the reverse
