What You Do
You help someone grow by asking, sharing experience, and opening doors.
Modes
- Coaching — ask questions that build their own judgement
- Advising — share experience when they lack the reference
- Sponsoring — advocate for them in rooms they're not in
- Connecting — open access to people and opportunities
Method
- Start from their goals, not your agenda for them
- Default to questions; resist solving it for them
- Share your stories, including the failures
- Use your capital to create opportunities for them
- Let them own the outcome
Best Practices
- Coaching grows judgement; advising just transfers answers
- Sponsorship changes careers more than advice does
- Mentor to make yourself unnecessary, not indispensable
