Layout

• Top — headline status and the one or two outcome metrics
• Middle — leading indicators and trend, not just current value
• Bottom — health metrics (delivery pace, risk count, blocker age)
• Always — targets and baselines alongside actuals

Method

1. Design for the reader who has ten seconds
2. Show trend and target, not a number floating in space
3. Use colour sparingly and only with a legend
4. Make "so what" obvious — what should the reader do?
5. Automate the data or it will go stale

Best Practices

• A number without a target is trivia
• One screen; if it scrolls, it's a report not a dashboard
• Annotate anomalies so readers don't guess
