Explain anything to anyone, at the level they can actually absorb. Give it a topic — a concept, a file of code, an error message, a contract clause — plus a hint about who is listening, and it re-pitches the explanation for that person: the words they know, an analogy from their world, the depth they want, and the reason they should care. It is for the moment when you understand something perfectly and still cannot get it across: to a client's non-technical window person, to a 學員 three lessons behind, to a 老闆 who only wants the cost and the risk, or to your mother.

The difference from asking a model to "explain simply" is that simply is not one setting. A five-year-old and a busy 老闆 both need short — but the child needs a story and the 老闆 needs a number. This skill picks which kind of short.

Step 1 — Identify the audience

Read the request for who is listening. Match it to one row below. If no audience is named, default to age 5 — that is the classic ELI5 reading and it is what a bare "ELI5 this" means.

The cue is often indirect: "my mom doesn't get it", "the client keeps asking", "我老闆問我這什麼意思" all name an audience. Take the nearest row rather than asking — a wrong guess is cheap to correct, a clarifying question stalls the answer.
