Write Theory Essays

Overview

Use this skill to write theory essays as acts of thinking, not as acts of decoration. Treat prose as a way to clarify meaning under pressure. Use this method: force the claim into clear language, distrust phrases that arrive too easily, and revise until the prose stops hiding the thought.

For short, simple edits, keep the process light. For any non-trivial draft or rewrite, follow the full workflow in references/essay-workflow.md. Read references/orwell-principles.md when you need the doctrine behind the process, and use references/review-checklist.md before finalizing prose that needs to stand on its own.

Operating Stance

Start from meaning, not wording. State to yourself in plain language what the piece is trying to claim, distinguish, or defend before you try to make it elegant.

Prefer explicit claims over atmospheric seriousness. If a sentence sounds intelligent before it becomes intelligible, treat it as suspicious.

Assume the first draft is compromised by convenience. Ready-made phrasing, inflated abstraction, passive constructions, and prestige diction usually enter because they are easy, not because they are necessary.

Keep the prose answerable to the reader. Name actors, define loaded terms, and cash abstractions out into observable mechanisms, examples, or consequences whenever the argument permits it.

Break any stylistic rule sooner than produce barbarous, misleading, or flattening prose. The rules serve meaning. They do not outrank it.
