On the morning of February 14, 2026, a polar vortex pushed temperatures across northern Germany below minus eighteen degrees Celsius. Grid demand spiked 340% above the seasonal baseline in under ninety minutes. Three distribution substations in the Hamburg metropolitan area tripped protective relays, cutting power to 41,000 households. But in the Wilhelmsburg district, 2,200 homes stayed lit. Their community microgrid -- a mesh of 814 rooftop solar arrays, 196 home battery systems, and 47 commercial-scale storage units, all coordinated by autonomous software agents -- detected the grid frequency drop at 06:14:02, islanded from the failing distribution network at 06:14:03, and began dispatching stored energy to deficit households at 06:14:05. Three seconds. No human operator was involved. No phone call was made. The agents searched for available surplus, matched it against demand, created escrow-protected energy trades, dispatched battery discharge commands, and balanced the microgrid load -- all through API calls to a commerce gateway that treated kilowatt-hours exactly like any other tradeable service. By the time the main grid was restored at 09:47, the Wilhelmsburg microgrid had executed 3,841 peer-to-peer energy trades totaling 14.6 MWh, and every prosumer was paid within seconds of confirmed delivery. The utility company later estimated that the autonomous response prevented EUR 2.3 million in infrastructure damage and avoided what would have been the district's worst blackout in thirty years. This guide shows you how to build that system.
