Marketplace liquidity is the measure of your ability to match buyers and sellers efficiently. It is the ultimate engagement loop: more supply creates more choice, which increases the likelihood of a transaction, which drives retention for both sides.

Core Liquidity Framework

To manage a marketplace, you must move beyond high-level GMV and look at the "overlap" between what supply wants to sell and what demand wants to buy.

1. Identify the "Fill Rate"

The Fill Rate is the primary output metric for marketplace health. It measures how many users who show clear intent actually successfully transact.

  • Define Intent: Do not look at all traffic. Look at "intentful demand" (e.g., a user searching for specific dates on Airbnb, or a user opening a rideshare app).
  • The Calculation: (Successful Transactions) / (Users with Intentful Searches).

2. Define the "Market Health Metric" (The Predictor)

The Fill Rate is a lagging indicator. You need a leading "Market Health Metric" that predicts whether a transaction will happen.

  • Identify the Friction: Determine the single biggest factor that causes a user to abandon.
    • Example (Lyft/Uber): Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA).
    • Example (Thumbtack): Number of quotes received for a project.
    • Example (Airbnb): Number of available homes in a specific neighborhood for specific dates.
  • Find the Plateau: Identify the threshold where conversion starts to plateau. For example, if an ETA is 2 minutes, conversion might be 90%. If it’s 10 minutes, it drops to 40%. The "Market Health" goal is to keep as many sessions as possible under that 2-minute threshold.
