Progress Writing Skill

Write effective progress files that enable continuity across sessions and agent handoffs in spec-driven development.

Overview

This skill guides Claude through creating progress files - the session-by-session work logs that capture what happened, what was verified, and what comes next. Progress files are the critical handoff mechanism that enables work to continue seamlessly across context windows, between agents, or after breaks.

Unlike notes (which capture durable context like decisions and research), progress files are append-only records of sessions. They answer: "What happened in this work session, and where should the next session pick up?"

When to Use

  • Starting a work session on a spec-driven feature
  • Resuming work after a context switch or break
  • Completing a task or reaching a milestone
  • Encountering blockers that need documentation
  • Handing off work to another agent or developer
  • Recording test results and verification outputs
  • Documenting issues and their resolutions
