Set kill criteria before you start

Write down, up front, what evidence would kill the idea — a TAM below a threshold, a competitor that already owns the wedge, a unit-economics ceiling that can't clear cost. Decide this before research begins, not after findings arrive, so the read of the evidence isn't quietly bent toward the answer you'd prefer. If nothing you could find would kill it, that's a sign the research isn't being taken seriously.
