Establish the version and project

Verified on 2026-10-04 against extension@4.1.31, Node.js >=22.12. This is a dated baseline, not a permanent latest-version claim. Read sources and verification when installing, upgrading, or resolving documentation conflicts.

1. Read the project's instructions, package scripts, lockfile, source manifest, and extension.config.*. Preserve its package manager, framework, formatting, and browser targets.
2. Resolve the project-local CLI. Examples below use npm exec -- extension after dependencies are installed; use the equivalent local runner for the project's manager. Do not let a missing local package silently fetch a different release.
3. Check the installed version and relevant help. Query npm when choosing a new version; do not upgrade an existing project merely to investigate it.
