Next.js Pages Router

Pages Router behavior is version-sensitive. Resolve the installed Next.js package and read the Pages Router guides under node_modules/next/dist/docs/ before changing routing, data fetching, API Routes, or special files.

Trigger boundary

Use this skill when the affected app contains pages/, src/pages/, legacy API Routes, _app, _document, _error, or Pages Router data-fetching functions. Do not apply Pages Router conventions to an App Router-only application.

Do not migrate routers unless the user explicitly requests it.

Inventory before editing

• route files, dynamic and catch-all segments
• _app, _document, _error, custom 404/500 pages
• API Routes and their authentication or validation
• server-side, static, ISR, and client-side data flows
• router hooks, redirects, locale routing, and middleware or Proxy
• shared layouts, providers, global styles, and document markup
• deployment constraints, runtime, cache, and revalidation behavior
